New mexico atomic bomb10/2/2023 There is a sharp left turn at the 14-mile point and visitors are prohibited from going anywhere but to Ground Zero, which is reinforced by a roadblock and security vehicles. ![]() The Trinity site itself is another 20 or so miles deeper into the range. In all, I saw vehicles from the New Mexico State Police, sheriff’s department, military police and other law enforcement units at the gate roadblock. They did inquire about alcohol or weapons in the vehicle, however. As it turned out, police or MPs-I don’t recall which-asked for all driver’s licenses but ignored the registration and insurance papers. We found demonstrators at the main highway turn to Stallion gate (one sign said “Trinity is Death,” as I recall), and about a 30-minute line of cars at the gate. I would not advise arriving later than 10 a.m.) We slept in at our hotel in Albuquerque near the airport and arrived at 9:30, per the PAO recommendation. and wait in line for what they thought would likely be less than an hour. Saturday, and wait for perhaps an hour to be admitted, or sleep a little longer and arrive at 9:30 a.m. They also said that I could arrive at the Stallion Range Center Gate at the north end of White Sands about 7:30 a.m. ![]() ![]() The PAOs were extremely helpful, alerting me in advance to the closure of the McDonald ranch house (which they said was undergoing repairs) and to the fact that my daughter and I would both need driver's licenses, and registration and proof of insurance for the vehicle, and that we should not bring alcohol or weapons. Unlike perhaps some other reviewers, I traveled 2,000 miles-from Florida-to see it (and to see my daughter, too), and so gathered all of the information that I could prior to the visit, using the White Sands Missile Range public affairs office for detailed information. Like many of the other reviewers of the April 5, 2014, open house at the Trinity Site, I, too, wanted to see the place where the atomic age began on July 16, 1945.
